# Meta Tags

Meta tags are associated with Data Quality & Observability (self-hosted) datasets. The [ENABLE\_STRICT\_TAGGING setting](/data-quality-self-hosted/admin-configuration/admin-console/configuration-settings/application-configuration-settings.md) determines whether the meta tags can be entered as free-form text or selected from an Admin-controlled list. All meta tags are shown here, regardless of the ENABLE\_STRICT\_TAGGING setting.

You can add a meta tag using the **Add Metatag** button on this page or from the [Dataset Manager](/data-quality-self-hosted/core-concepts/dataset-directory/dataset-manager.md).
