# Kerberos authentication

Kerberos is a network authentication protocol that uses secret-key cryptography to provide secure authentication over unsecured networks.

You can use Kerberos authentication for connecting to a data source, for example Hive, on [Cloud Native (Kubernetes)](/data-quality-self-hosted/installation/installing-data-quality-observability-self-hosted-on-self-hosted-kubernetes.md) and [Hadoop](/data-quality-self-hosted/installation/configuring-apache-hadoop-to-execute-dq-jobs.md) deployments of Collibra DQ.

{% hint style="info" %}
Kerberos authentication is only supported for Kubernetes and Hadoop deployments of Collibra DQ, but not for [Standalone](/data-quality-self-hosted/installation/installing-data-quality-observability-self-hosted-on-self-hosted-spark-standalone.md) deployments.
{% endhint %}

## Authentication types

We support Kerberos password manager, keytab, password, and ticket granting ticket (TGT) for many of our supported data sources. For more information on which data sources support Kerberos authentication, see the [supported data sources page](/data-quality-self-hosted/connections/supported-connections.md).

{% hint style="info" %}
Ensure that you [configure the krb5.conf file](/data-quality-self-hosted/connections/authentication/create-a-krb5-conf-file.md) before you attempt to authenticate with Kerberos.
